FAQ's
Are alternative programs open to all students? Yes. We encourage parents and students to research the various programs offered by Edmonton Public Schools and to choose a program most suitable for their needs. Note that some programs have stringent entrance requirements.
Are alternative programs available at all grade levels? It depends on the program you choose. Some programs are available from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Others are offered only at the elementary (kindergarten to Grade 6), junior high (grades 7 to 9), and senior high (grades 10 to 12) levels.
How many alternative programs can I choose from? There are many possibilities and opportunities for students. Currently, there are more than 30 alternative programs developed in response to parent, community and student interest.
How do I enrol my child in a program of choice close to my home? You can view our school listing to determine which schools are situated in your area. Then, we encourage you to research the programs that are offered at the schools close to you. Simply contact the principals of the schools you are considering and they will be happy to answer all of your questions. I would like to enrol at a school for its program of choice. However, it's not a school designated for my neighbourhood. Can I register? Yes, as long as there is space available at the school and you meet the entrance criteria that may be in place. Yellow bus service may be available for alternative programs at the elementary level if attending the designated alternative program school. Parents are responsible for any transportation fees that apply.
How can I have a say in my child's program? Edmonton Public Schools encourages parental participation and feedback in all of our schools and programs. Some of our alternative programs have parent advisory groups who actively participate in all aspects of the specific program.
Where do you get ideas for new programs? Current alternative programs have been developed on the basis of concepts proposed by parents, community members, or district staff. Extensive collaboration occurs to explore the concept when individuals or groups propose concepts to the district. Sufficient demand is essential for program viability. The interested parents and/or community members must demonstrate to administration and the board that there is demand for the concept. For a new alternative program to be approved, it must meet the board policy and regulation regarding guidelines for new programs.
Why do you offer alternative programs? Edmonton Public Schools aims to serve the diverse needs of Edmonton families and children. By offering a number of programming choices, every family can find a comfortable fit for their child's interests, talents and abilities.
When did alternative programs begin? The first program of choice was introduced in Edmonton Public Schools in 1974. By the end of the 1970s, we offered our students more than half a dozen new program opportunities. Since then, new and innovative programs have been steadily added. Today, there are approximately 30 programs to choose from.
